My name is Aysha. I was born and raised in Dhaka. Growing up, I was always interested in science, but it wasn’t until I was in high school that I realized I wanted to become a doctor. I come from a middle-class family. Therefore my parents could not afford to send me to an expensive school. I attended a government school. It was there that I saw the stark differences in healthcare between the rich and the poor. It was then that I knew I wanted to become a doctor and make a difference in people’s lives.
My family wasn’t too thrilled about my decision. They didn’t think it was a practical career choice. Neither did they have the means to support me financially. But I was determined to make it happen. I worked hard, got good grades, and was awarded a scholarship to study medicine at Dhaka Medical College. Being a medical student is tough, but I’m determined to see it through. I want to be a voice for those who are often left behind. I want to ensure that everyone has the right to good health. I want to work in underprivileged communities where the need for healthcare is greatest.
