Last week Tamim Iqbal said he was going to retire. However, the very next day he said he was not going to retire. This happened thanks to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Prime Minister herself has always been a cricket fan. She watches all of Bangladesh’s matches on TV. Sometimes she even watches them at the stadiums.

গত সপ্তাহে তামিম ইকবাল জানিয়েছিলেন তিনি অবসরে যাচ্ছেন। তবে পরের দিনই জানিয়ে দেন তিনি অবসরে যাচ্ছেন না। প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার জন্যই এমনটা হয়েছে। প্রধানমন্ত্রী নিজে বরাবরই একজন ক্রিকেট ভক্ত। তিনি টেলিভিশনে বাংলাদেশের সব ম্যাচ দেখেন। কখনও কখনও তিনি এমনকি স্টেডিয়ামেও তাদেরকে দেখেন।

Tamim Iqbal announced his retirement last week. However, the very next day he said he would not retire. This happened only because Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina interfered. The Prime Minister herself has been a cricket fan her entire life. She watches almost all of Bangladesh’s matches on TV. Sometimes she even watches them at the stadiums. She always makes sure the players are okay. Tamim’s teary goodbye made the Prime Minister emotional. She contacted Tamim that evening. Tamim knew that he had no other option but to un-retire. The meeting was held the very next day. Mashrafe Mortaza was also involved in the meeting, along with the BCB president. After the meeting ended, Tamim announced that he would not retire.

গত সপ্তাহে অবসরের ঘোষণা দেন তামিম ইকবাল। তবে পরের দিনই তিনি অবসর নেবেন না বলে জানান। প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার হস্তক্ষেপের কারণেই এমনটা হয়েছে। প্রধানমন্ত্রী নিজেও সারাজীবন একজন ক্রিকেট ভক্ত। বাংলাদেশের প্রায় সব ম্যাচই তিনি টেলিভিশনে দেখেন। কখনও কখনও তিনি এমনকি স্টেডিয়ামেও তাদেরকে দেখেন। তিনি সবসময় নিশ্চিত করেন যে খেলোয়াড়রা ঠিক আছে।
তামিমের অশ্রুসিক্ত বিদায় প্রধানমন্ত্রীকে আবেগাপ্লুত করে। ওই দিন সন্ধ্যায় তিনি তামিমের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ করেন। তামিম জানতেন, অবসর ত্যাগ করা ছাড়া তার আর কোনো উপায় নেই। পরের দিনই সাক্ষাৎ অনুষ্ঠিত হয়। সাক্ষাতে মাশরাফী মোর্ত্তজা ছাড়াও যুক্ত ছিলেন বিসিবি সভাপতি। সাক্ষাৎ শেষ হওয়ার পর অবসর না নেওয়ার ঘোষণা দেন তামিম।

She watches Bangladesh play regularly, on TV, and sometimes at the stadiums. She’s always enquiring about the players’ welfare. Tamim’s sudden, teary goodbye touched a nerve everywhere. And when the news reached the Prime Minister, it was natural for her to get involved. As soon as Tamim received the message that she wanted to meet, it was clear he would have to un-retire. BCB president Nazmul Hasan was present at the meeting, which lasted three hours. Afterward, everyone left the meeting with smiles. And Tamim confirmed he was going to continue playing. Mashrafe Mortaza didn’t want the credit but he was influential too. Neither the Prime Minister nor Mashrafe are part of the BCB. They had to intervene when those in charge of handling such situations had failed. Once the Prime Minister heard of the issue, she reached out to Mashrafe. Tamim responded to Mashrafe’s call. The pair went to meet the Prime Minister the very next day. Fans can rest assured now that Tamim will continue to play.
