This is not the first time this happened to Musk. Musk lost the top rank to Mr. Arnault last year as well. Between 2021 and 2022, he lost nearly 200 billion dollars.

Earlier this week, the Tesla and Twitter boss briefly retook the number one spot on the global wealth pyramid. His net worth reached an estimated $187.1bn, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The Bloomberg Billionaires Index is a daily ranking of the world’s 500 richest people. Shares of Tesla fell by more than 5 percent just the day after. This caused Musk’s net worth to drop by nearly $2bn and allowed the Frenchman to reclaim the top spot. It’s all a bit of déjà vu for Elon Musk, however. Last year, Musk briefly lost the top rank to Mr. Arnault, as shares in the automaker declined last winter. However, until Wall Street appeared unimpressed by Tesla’s 2023 Investor Day, the company was on a roll. Since 6 January this year, Tesla stock has climbed 100 percent.
