Bangladesh is on its way to design and manufacture its own airplanes! It is going to be a basic trainer aircraft, designed to help pilots train in aviation. It is being called the Bangabandhu Basic Trainer (BBT) aircraft. The second prototype of the BBT was unveiled by the Prime Minister herself. It was shown off at the Military Hardware Display 2024, an expo where the latest military equipment is displayed. The Bangabandhu Aeronautical Center (BAC) was a major part of this project. This second prototype has the codename BBT-2. The development of both BBT-1 and BBT-2 is a landmark for the country’s aviation industry.
Local designers, engineers, and technicians BAC have built the aircraft using their own technology. The manufacturing is happening in Lalmonirhat. In addition to BAC, experts at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University (BSMRAAU) are also supervising the project. The second prototype has a frame made of wood, steel, and aluminum combined. It is a two seater, from where both pilots can operate the plane. Additionally, it can carry two extra passengers, or a stretcher with a patient in emergencies. However, the minds behind the project want to make this clear; the BBT-2 is exclusively for training.
