Virginia “Ginger” Hislop earned her master’s degree at the age of 105. She returned to her university, Stanford University, eighty-three years after leaving her master’s program for love. Hislop’s journey began in 1936 at Stanford University School of Education. She pursued a bachelor’s degree in education there. Hislop graduated in 1940 and promptly embarked on obtaining her master’s degree in education to fulfill her ambition of becoming a teacher. Then, after completing her coursework and before her final thesis was submitted, Hislop decided to shelve her ambitions for a later time. World War II was in full swing, and Hislop’s then-boyfriend, George Hislop was called to serve in the war.
The news compelled the couple to marry and Hislop left her program. A 105-year-old Hislop said that marriage was her priority over her master’s degree. Hislop said she always enjoyed studying. She knew she could return to finish her degree whenever she wanted. That time was this year. She had already completed all her credits. Stanford even lifted the thesis requirement. Therefore Hislop received her master of arts in education on June 16. On a sad note, she was the lone member of the class of 1940.
