At least 13 people have lost their lives and 4.5 million are affected by floods in eastern Bangladesh. These floods were triggered by heavy monsoon rains. Rescuers are scrambling to evacuate flooded communities. Nearly 190,000 people were taken to emergency relief shelters. 11 of the country’s 64 districts were affected by the flooding. The flood-affected areas extend from Sylhet in the north through Cumilla, Feni, and Cox’s Bazar in the south. By a fair margin, Feni was hit the worst. The annual monsoon rains in Bangladesh cause widespread destruction every year. However, climate change is shifting weather patterns and increasing the number of extreme weather events.
The army and the navy have been deployed, with speedboats and helicopters rescuing those stranded by the swollen rivers. However, it was the students who once again stepped up to help the distressed. These young people have gathered food and supplies from donations, NGOs, and corporations and engaged themselves with the relief work. They are working side by side with the army to distribute food and supplies to the flood-affected areas. Though the situation has gotten much better since the floods started, there are still many people who are marooned and need rescue.
